Kylian Mbappe, the leading figure in French football, will not be able to say his farewell in a Champions League final after being beaten by German side Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday, depriving him of playing his final game before leaving PSG on June 1 in next month's final at Wembley.

Kylian Mbappe has been the star of PSG for years, but his time with the Parisian giants has come to an end as his contract expires and he decides not to renew with the club that made him an international star (although he made his debut with Monaco, his glory came with PSG, where he made 306 appearances and scored 255 goals).

Champion with the French national team at Russia 2018 and runner-up at Qatar 2022, Mbappe also failed to give PSG what no one else has given them: a Champions League title, the most important club tournament in the world.

Last night, in a shock defeat to Borussia Dortmund (after losing the first leg 1-0), Mbappé's last game with the Parisian club in the Champions League was sealed.

The Qatari-owned outfit have been unable to secure the coveted 'Orejona' despite spending heavily in recent years, and with the departure of the Parisian striker and several other key figures in the past, it seems that a cycle of failure in international competition is coming to an end.

Yesterday, Mbappe was one of four PSG players to hit the woodwork in the second half, and coach Luis Enrique lamented the fact that his side, who had 31 shots on goal, were "unlucky" in the semi-final second leg at the Parc des Princes.

"I don't like to talk about bad luck," Mbappe said shortly afterwards, contradicting the Spanish coach. "When you're good, you don't hit the post, you score. I tried to help as much as I could. When I say we need to be more clinical, I am the one who needs to score. But that's life, you have to pick yourself up."

Born on 12 August 1970 as a result of the merger between Paris Football Club and Stade Saint-Germain, the club will have to rebuild itself and find a new path, as it has become clear that great teams, or at least championship-winning teams, are not built on money alone. It is not insignificant to be knocked out by a team currently fifth in the Bundesliga, a team with a much smaller budget.

"The objective I set myself when I arrived was to compete as much as possible for every trophy," said the Spanish coach ahead of the second leg of the semi-final. His side have already won Ligue 1 and Mbappe's last game in charge will be the French Cup final against Lyon on 25 May.

"We have to remember that this is a new project with a new coach, with a lot of changes. There are a lot of positives and good things to take into next season," captain Marquinhos told Canal Plus.

It's hard to see how PSG can be better equipped to win the Champions League without Mbappe (Messi and Neymar are among the stars who have left the French capital), although the Qatari group that owns the club won't have any financial problems in restructuring.

Mbappe, France's top star, has been left out of the team or substituted by the coach in domestic league matches over the last three months, apparently in the name of planning for next season, which only underlines his bleak end in a heavy shirt like PSG's.

It won't be easy for him now at Real Madrid (the most successful club in European history), but hopes will be renewed for the star French attacker, who has said he wants to represent his country at the Paris Olympics in 2024.
